Subscription or one-off kit?
Subscriptions are not automatically better value. Here is when they are, and when a single good kit wins.
A subscription is a bet that your child's interest will last long enough to justify recurring payment. Sometimes that is a good bet and sometimes a single well-chosen kit is the better buy. It is worth being deliberate about which situation you are in.
When a one-off kit is the right call
- The interest is new and unproven
- You are buying for a child you do not see often
- Budget is genuinely tight - one good kit beats three months of a mediocre subscription
- Your child prefers going deep on one thing over constant novelty
When a subscription earns its keep
- The interest is established and your problem is keeping up with it
- You have already watched one-off kits get abandoned
- You want the decision made for you every week rather than researching the next purchase
